Lectors are an integral part of the Liturgy at all Masses. According to the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops, the guidelines for the important position of Lector are as follows:
“In the celebration of the Mass with the people, the readings are always read from the ambo. The function of proclaiming the readings is by tradition not presidential but ministerial. Therefore the readings are to be read by a reader, but the Gospel by the Deacon or, in his absence, by a Priest.
“Lay people may be deputed to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, people who are truly suited to carrying out this function and carefully prepared, so that, by their hearing the readings from the sacred texts, the faithful may conceive in their hearts a sweet and living affection for Sacred Scripture. (GIRM, no. 101) They may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer and, in the absence of a psalmist, recite the Psalm between the readings.
“Candidates are to be fully initiated practicing Catholics, high school graduates, validly married (if married), and recognized for faith and devotion to the Holy Eucharist as well as for service in the parish.”

The ushers are a group of volunteers who at each Mass are responsible for greeting parishioners and making them feel welcome. They also assist with seating as needed and taking up the collections. In many cases they assist handicapped people in having them receive the Eucharist. At the end of Mass, they hand out the bulletins. The time they spend is generally during their regular attendance at Mass.
Greeting people and making them feel welcome is an important part of creating a warm and loving parish atmosphere. Helping people receive the sacraments and offering them support is a true service to individuals and to the parish.
Being an usher not only helps our congregation, it offers an easy opportunity to get to know other people in the parish. Please contact us if you are interested in this ministry.
