Advent is a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. Advent is not the intense season of penance that Lent is, but we should still be focused on preparation and cleansing. The violet candles remind us of this. But they also remind us that the coming Messiah will be King of our hearts, as violet was the color of kings. The pink candle is lit on the third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means "Rejoice!" and the readings for that Sunday are about rejoicing.
The optional white candle is lit at Christmas, symbolizing that Jesus has come into the world and into our hearts. The white candle waiting before our altar during Advent will be lit on Christmas Day.
